Family Therapy in NYC

Strengthening connections, together

Parenting is rewarding, but let’s be honest,  it can also feel overwhelming when challenges arise. Sometimes the best path forward isn’t just supporting your child individually, but working together as a family unit to strengthen your relationships and communication.

At COBB, we offer family therapy at our Manhattan and Brooklyn offices, as well as online throughout New York State. Our experienced therapists create a supportive space where families can address challenges together and build stronger, healthier connections.

When is family therapy helpful?

While individual therapy for children can be incredibly valuable, sometimes the challenges your family faces require a different approach. Family therapy can be especially beneficial when:

  • Your child’s struggles are creating increased conflict at home
  • Communication between family members feels stuck or ineffective
  • You’re navigating major life transitions or disruptions
  • Past events have impacted family relationships
  • Behavioral challenges are affecting the whole household
  • You want to strengthen your parent-child connection

Benefits of Family Therapy

Family therapy is about discovering new ways to connect and thrive together when the current status quo is no longer serving you as a family unit. When families commit to this process, the positive changes often extend far beyond what brought them to therapy in the first place.

Family Therapy at COBB

We understand that every family has its own story, its own rhythm and its own way of showing love. Our approach honors what makes your family unique while helping you build on the strengths you already have. Whether you’re dealing with a specific challenge or simply want to strengthen your connections, we’ll support you in creating the changes that matter most to your family.

Our Therapeutic Approaches

Attachment-Focused Family Therapy

This approach recognizes that the bond between you and your child is the foundation for their emotional development. We’ll explore your family’s attachment patterns like how you connect, disconnect and reconnect. You’ll learn techniques that build secure attachment, helping your child feel safe enough to explore the world while knowing you’re their secure base. This might include specific exercises to enhance connection, understanding how your own childhood impacts your parenting, and building rituals that strengthen your unique bond.

Structural Family Therapy

Sometimes families need help clarifying roles and boundaries. This approach looks at your family as a system, for example, who makes decisions, how limits are set, and whether everyone’s needs are being met. We’ll work on creating clear, age-appropriate boundaries that help children feel secure while respecting their growing autonomy. This is especially helpful when behavior issues stem from unclear expectations or when major transitions have disrupted your family structure.

Emotion-Focused Family Therapy

Big feelings can overwhelm the whole family. This approach helps everyone (parents included) understand and regulate emotions more effectively. We’ll explore the emotions underlying difficult behaviors, teach co-regulation strategies like how to stay calm when your child can’t, and develop a family language for feelings. You’ll learn how your emotional responses impact your child and discover ways to model healthy emotional expression.

Solution-Focused Family Therapy

Rather than spending months analyzing what’s wrong, this approach focuses on what’s already working and how to do more of it. We’ll identify your family’s existing strengths, set clear goals together, and work toward practical solutions. This is particularly effective for families dealing with specific challenges like school refusal, sibling conflict, or behavior issues that need immediate attention.

At COBB, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Our therapists are trained in multiple evidence-based approaches, allowing us to tailor our work to fit your family’s specific needs and goals. Depending on what you’re facing, we might draw from one or several of these methods to help your family find its way forward.

Family Therapy FAQ’s

Individual therapy works well when your child needs their own space to process emotions or develop specific skills. Family therapy is better when the challenge affects everyone, like ongoing conflict, communication breakdowns, or when your child’s behavior is impacting the whole household. Sometimes we actually recommend both. We can help you figure out the best approach during your initial consultation.

Not at all. Family therapy is about helping everyone to understand each other better. Our therapists are skilled at making sure everyone feels heard and valued. We often find that kids feel relieved when the whole family is working together on solutions rather than them being the “identified problem.” The goal is for everyone to feel like they’re on the same team.

Life is busy, we get it! While it’s ideal when everyone can attend, we work with your reality. We can schedule some sessions when everyone’s available and others with whoever can make it. We’ll also help you share what you’re learning with family members who miss sessions, ensuring everyone stays connected to the process.

Not necessarily. Family therapy is flexible. Some sessions might include everyone, while others might be just parents or specific parent-child pairs. We might spend time with siblings together or meet with parents alone to discuss strategies. Your therapist will recommend the format that best serves your goals each week.

Every family is different, but many families see significant improvement within a few sessions. Some families come for a specific issue and wrap up once it’s resolved. Others find it helpful to check in periodically even after the main concerns are addressed. We’ll regularly review your progress together and adjust our plan based on what’s working for your family.
